Project Requirements
Description
As part of the class, you are required to complete a quarter long project. You will need to form groups of 3 students each. The project should include a proposal that would be discussed with the instructor, brainstormed in the class (the section with peter boda) and approved by instructor.
Thus, the requirements for the project include:
- 1.) two pages project proposal
- 2.) five minute proposal presentation
- 3.) final project in-class presentation and demo
- 4.) write up including evaluation consisting of atleast 8 pages in ACM format [1]
- 5.) webpage where the presentation, demo, code, and also write up can be downloaded.
Project Ideas
Although we encourage you to come up with original projects, we have some suggestions of ideas that could be explored.
- Noise Mapping: Build a noise map of UCLA for a period of day that not only identifies the decibal level of the noise but also characterizes it in someway (cars/bus vs people vs nature vs industrial, etc..). This would involve some type of pattern classification along with visualization.
- Image filters: Build image clustering and filtering tools integrated with existing image sharing application such as Picasa that makes effective, manageable use of image based recall applications
- Location Trace + Web: What can we learn from a walk? The idea here is to augment location trace information from information from the web. This should be done in an automatic process and be scalable to new information as well (ie. architecture needs to be organized and scalable). We can think of weather, traffic, proximity to entities, etc... Then this trace should be searchable in some form - perhaps use spatial/temporal databases here.
- Selective sharing services and visualization: Create a location-trace-based application that supports at least three “levels” of sharing with associated visualization support for user configuration
- Participatory Story Telling: Use the phones as instruments to tell a location-centric story with multiple media types. e.g., location based images, audio annotation; easily composed and delivered.
- Campaign Management: Build framework for the campaign management system. This would involve setting up a system for authentication, automatic phone configuration, campaign monitoring and online tasking (thru sms) and user feedbac
